My Aspirations.
My dream job could be just about anything right now, I'm not sure if I want to be a character artist, an environment artist, or a concept artist. I've tried my hand teaching in my spare time and while it's been a great way to learn myself it's not something I could ever see myself following as a career. Back in college I watched a documentary on the making of The Last of Us and through that I think the company I'd most like to work for is Naughty Dog. Their work environment is really relaxed, they have a sense of togetherness in the way the office stations are arranged and the departments all interact with one another to run ideas back and forth, and so they have a much more involved and creative workflow.
On their current website they have a temporary assignment for an environment artist which lists the following requirements:
- Experience modeling environments for games using Maya, or related experience/software
- An exceptional understanding of form, shape, structure, and silhouette in regard to modeling
- Strong experience and techniques in creating plants, shrubs and vines using cards/flats
- Strong artistic ability to visualize entire levels and detail with minimal concept art and direction
- Strong technical ability to manage assets to fit memory, design, and frame rate limits
- Strong polygonal modeling skills- able to generate clean and efficient models at a very fast pace
- Self-motivated- requires minimal direction, can carry on the vision for the level until completion and commit to deadlines
- Good communication skills – able to help others and ask for help when needed. Being proactive in sharing info and assets
- Great team-player attitude - being flexible with new ideas, being open to direction and changes. Listening to team mates
- Deadline oriented- being able to manage and organize work so he meets all the deadlines and is able to adjust when changes happen
- Foundation in the traditional arts
With this I aim to improve my 3D modelling capabilities through the assignments set for the course, I work on my traditional practices daily and aim for progression in each sketch even if it doesnt look high quality, I'm aiming to use techniques like speed and blind drawing to improve my drawing overall. I'm capable of motivating myself in this line of work and I'm more than able to work to deadlines and constraints thanks to my time in the engineering field. I'm flexible with my ideas and different concepts but if I don't like the ideas people put forward that I have to work with I lose interest and my work ethic falters. I'm usually the person who takes charge of idea generation and then we adapt as necessary and other people add their ideas until we get something interesting and cohesive. I worked incredibly hard to get into this course and that commitment will stay with me for the duration of this course because I want to keep improving and make something of myself.
